Fireplaces are growing ever more popular as people realize how attractive and cozy they make a room appear. In ages past, every home had a wood fireplace as a matter of necessity. They provided a means to cook, keep warm, dry clothing and provide light and comfort after sunset. We no longer depend on fireplaces for those things but homes they are often the deciding factor for people in the market for a new or older property in Southern Maryland. There is something about a fireplace, whether lit or not, that makes a house become a home.

The gas fireplace is as popular today as the wood fireplace. There are advantages to both and the one that you choose depends on how much work you want to put into it and what kind of heat you want in the room. Both create a wonderful atmosphere of hominess but what really makes a fireplace spectacular is the mantle. There are so many mantles to choose from that you can easily match it to your decor if you are adding on or design your room around it if you are including it as part of a new build. There are wooden mantles, ceramic mantles, metal mantles and all sorts of other surrounds that you can use to set off your fireplace to perfection.

You may also want to consider a charming gas or wooden stove. These are usually free-standing in order to better heat the entire room evenly and can be very attractive. You can choose a gas stove or one fueled by wood.

A wood fireplace is loaded with panache and ambiance but it does take a bit of work to keep up. Professional installers can make sure it is well vented so that no smoke enters your home. The wood is placed on a grate that is a few inches above the floor of the fireplace so that the heat is more efficient. You will need a supply of firewood and the grate will have to have the ashes removed periodically. The chimney should be cleaned every year to prevent build up that may pose a fire hazard but a wood fireplace that is well maintained is perfectly safe.

A gas fireplace is more convenient and labor free. A professionally installed gas fireplace costs just a few cents per hour to operate and the newer models heat a room very efficiently. There are models that are vented and ones that need no venting at all. You can even get one with a programmable thermostat! A simple push of a button on the fireplace or on a remote control starts the flames that lick enticingly over the realistic-looking logs. A gas fireplace is largely labor and maintenance free and looks and feels just like a wood fireplace.

Whichever type of fireplace you choose it is an important asset to your home, making it more cozy and enjoyable and also raising the value of your home.
